Beta DVDs and Linux

From X-Plane Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

If you have X-Plane 9 beta DVDs, you can use them with Linux. But the installation procedure is a little bit more complex because the disks themselves were mastered before version 9 supported Linux. (Version 9 Linux support wasn't announced until mid-beta due to some show-stopping Linux-specific problems.)

These instructions assume you have:

  • 8 X-Plane 9 beta DVDs from Laminar Research
  • Web access to download patches.

Steps:

1. Download the latest X-Plane Linux DVD installer here.

2. Insert disk 1 (the disk with the sim) and run the installer. Install X-Plane.

Note that when you install the sim, you may not be able to select any scenery. This is normal!

You now have X-Plane 9 beta 1 (or beta 11). There are a few problems:

  • There are no Linux applications.
  • There is no scenery.

3. Download the X-Plane updater from http://www.x-plane.com/demo.html

4. Run the updater. Use the "Find It" option to locate your installation of X-Plane if it isn't listed. Let the updater upgrade your installation to X-Plane 9.00 final.

5. Insert the other DVDs. Run the Linux DVD installer and use the "add and remove scenery" option to add any additional scenery you wish to load.
